So here's the deal. My laptop came with a genuine copy of Windows 7 Home Basic 64bit but the harddisk recently got a problem so I had to replace it. I installed Windows 8 Release Preview 32 bit afterwards and since its gonna expire in January id like to purchase the final build/product. Question is, will I be eligible for the $40 upgrade plan considering I have a new harddisk?. I still have the product key of my previous version of windows written under my laptop, I don't know if that helps. Plus my laptop didn't come with a recovery disk as the recovery was included in a partition of the old harddisk. Thanks.

Yep, MS stated all pc's running a genuine copy of Windows are eligible. Go ahead and run the upgrade advisor and it will take you through the upgrade.

If you have any problems activating Windows 8, you can call Microsoft. The phone number in the US is 1-800-Microsoft (642-7676).

The phone numbers for all other countries are listed here.
