System Image back up in Windows 8.1

Getting error that this drive is not a valid back up location. Tried both a pen drive & a WD passport hard drive. Nada on both. Can anyone help? Thanks

just copy and past on your other drive or removable storage device
if you are using a windows 8 and got a windows 8.1 setup the you just update by choosing the 1st option during setup
which says keep apps , personal files , settings same .
and it will keep all of your things and you will get windows 8.1

I did get a system image back up to my other drive & then cut it & pasted ot to my external hard drive
