Not sure if this is a good place... mod can move if not, but suddenly today I have a very odd issue:

My Desktop IE browses perfectly but my Metro/WinRT IE does not. Instead it displays an error:

This page can?t be displayed

  • Make sure the web address Bing is correct.
  • Look for the page with your search engine.
  • Refresh the page in a few minutes.

  • Check that all network cables are plugged in.
  • Verify that airplane mode is turned off.
  • Make sure your wireless switch is turned on.
  • See if you can connect to mobile broadband.
  • Restart your router.

Fix connection problems

I have tried these 'fixes' suggested from various search results:

  • Reset IE settings to defaults using Reset function
  • Reset winsock/firewall to defaults using a netsh reset <winsock/advfirewall> command
  • Restarted (no help)
  • Tried changing proxy settings in IE to manual in case something is announcing an auto-proxy

So... looking for some guru to suggest another thing.

Oh yes, more info:

  • It is not only IE that cannot browse, but all Metro/WinRT apps cannot either. The Store app started this investigation because it was showing an error, but really all apps cannot browse.
  • Desktop browsers all work perfectly as I said.
  • Using an IP instead of name also doesn't work

ok... I worked it out. In the IE options there is an option "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode". Checked it, rebooted and it worked.

Now for wondering how that was disabled... all I did today was install Windows Updates and reboot..
