Anyone else have issue with the background artist picture not showing up for your music?
Even when wifi is connected and I am playing a song the background always stays gray.
Any fix for this?

Yes, there is a fix. It's the MPAtool app. You can even choose which image you want for the artist's background: MPAtool | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

Thanks might give it a try if I get desperate, but still its rather a workaround hack than really a fix as to why Xbox Music does not get the art from MS servers.

The strange thing is it works for some artists, e.g. Taylor Swift, but Katy Perry nothing; out of the around 20 artists whose music I have on my WP it works for two, WTH?

btw all of these are sync-ed from my PC collection, not bought from Xbox music.
