Picked up a 521, having issues with micro SD card...

I picked up a 521 to replace my busted old LG and to get me b y until i could afford a real upgrade. This is my first WP.

I am having issues with the SD card. It is an old generic 2GB card that I've been using forever. The phone is not reading the card at all, it works just fine in the old phone. Do I need to reformat it? Am I missing a switch somewhere in the settings to activate the slot?

I am going to be getting a new card but would like keep this one as a backup just in case.

Try reformatting to exFat on desktop then reinsert.
The 521 should've asked where to store pics, videos then should offer to reformat the card in the phone initially on set-up.
Does your phone have an called "storage check" installed?

Will try reformatting it tomorrow. The new card should be here in a couple days so it isn't too big a deal.

That app is not installed currently.
