You may want to
force an update to your phone first before reverting back to an older OS version and effectively wiping out your personal data - who knows by chance this might do the trick: head to
Settings > Keyboards > add keyboards, then select any keyboard language that has a file size and the word "download" beside it. Choose something you might find useful, while you're at it. Wait for the download to finish, after which
you'll be prompted that an update is ready to be installed. Just proceed with the installation and restart your phone, hoping that this would correct whatever minor errors have been incurred by the DP updates.
If this still doesn't fix the problem, then a
Factory Reset for your HTC 8s seems to be your only way. The steps on how to this are in the hyperlink posted.
This is to assume that you've already went
to Settings and tried disabling Airplane mode there, rather than just from the notification center (from swiping down your screen). I once couldn't turn off Airplane mode from Notification Center, but going to Settings and turning it off there worked.
Let us know what works.
