Video recording in Windows 10 Mobile - only mono audio?

I went to a concert last night, and recorded a couple of songs. I've done that before, with WP 8.1 on my Lumia Icon. They sounded and looked very good.

This time, the recording (using the Camera app - not Lumia Camera), looked good, but the sound was horrible and only in mono. I asked this in the Lumia Icon W10M mobile thread, and someone else confirmed that his Icon also records in mono. Can someone else with Windows 10 Mobile Build 10581 on another model verify that the Camera app in Windows 10 Mobile it only records in mono??

That seems absolutely insane, so I can only assume it's a bug. Also, the Camera app, as opposed to Lumia Camera (which no longer opens!) doesn't have the audio adjustment settings (surround, bass cutoff).

If for some reason the videos are only recorded in mono sound (after the Icon was specifically designed to record great audio no less!), that seems like a bug they can't have in the official release.

1 - Lumia Camera was cancelled by MS, now there's Windows Camera

2 - How many mics have your Phone? Did you look in settings everywhere?

1. I know, that bugs me. Lumia Camera was better, imo.

2. The Icon/930 has 4 mics. In WP8.1 it recorded in excellent stereo/surround. I've tried to find settings for this, but haven't found any.

Do you know of any settings? Have you tried recording and seen if it records in mono on your phone? That's what I would like to know.

I searched before I posted, and found nothing. What was it you read about? Can you help me out and record a short video clip on your W10M phone and see if it recorded in mono?

Sorry I can't, I owe a Lumia with only one mic, I remeber something about Home screen , slide to all apps-> Settings -> audio

lumia icon or lumia 930 and any other have HAAC mic in lumia icon have 4 haac mic like lumia 930. using wp8.1 with lumia camera, thats no problem about sound quality. i just say lumia 930/icon the best ever smartphone for music concert record. sound very wide and stereo :cool:

in wm10 lastest build degradation video recording quality (Sound quality) not better like wp8.1

i'm using lumia 925 and try install lastest build wm10 and have problem like that. (sound quality) in video record. when using wp8.1 video got stereo sound and wm10 got mono sound.

hope the next wm10 have feature like 8.1

Yeah, there's an audio setting there, but only for playback, nothing for recording. Thanks though.

Thanks, and I'm glad it's not just the Icon (since it's a tiny percentage of phones) but also bummed your phone has the same problem!
This seems like such a weird bug that I don't understand how we can be this close to release and not have this working. It was one of the reasons I liked the Icon, the audio recording was great.

Can more people chime in and see if this is across the board? Anyone know if this has been mentioned elsewhere? I haven't heard anything about it before!

I thought I broke my phone or something. on my 830 I noticed that on the properties page it says it was only recording in MONO. so I went to get my sisters 1520 and same with her it was only recording in MONO. looks like that's a real bummer for all of us Attachment 116256

I agree ! Not sure why msft would move us to an inferior video recording mode when lumia camera 5 worked awesomely when recording.

Lumia 930 here. There's indeed no stereo/dolby surround option in Windows 10 Mobile :/
And as one (or two) of my mics are defect, I even don't have sound at all when recording in mono.

I'm desperately waiting for stereo to come back. It worked well on 8.1 using Lumia Camera...

Can a 950/XL user comment if their phones support stereo/surround video recording?

L640 here, also getting mono audio with Camera or Voice Recorder but stereo with Perfect Recorder.

There must be some bug or missing setting to adjust audio options.

I'm also using 930. Having the same issue when taking video.
Windows Camera did not give us any option for Surround when taking video unlike in Lumia Camera....

I hope they Fix this issue.

Holy cow, that's a HUGE bug. Those premium phones are suppsed to do better than just stereo even. They're supposed to do full 5.1 dolby surround sound recording with videos. Stereo is the bare minimum. They're also supposed to have the Nokia mic codec that prevents ANY clipping and ensures flawless audio.

If my 1520 were still around I'd be PISSED.

I have Lumia 1020 and I can confirm that after updating to dev preview 586 WP10 update, my phone is also recording videos with mono sound. I tried all the camera apps but none works for stereo. This is a huge bug indeed in WP10 and I hope they will fix it in final release of Lumia 1020 WP10.

If a fix comes at all, it will probably need to be implemented as part of a firmware upgrade, which means it may need to wait until the official releases.

In video recording settings switch to the highest resolution and it should record in stereo. It works for my L1520 with 10586.63.

use lumia camera if you still have it and haven't updated it. works just fine , with no audio issues.

With L930 you do get stereo recording in 4k/30fps with .71 build.
Sucks though, because camera was the main reason for me to buy the phone in first place and now its almost as good as those 50-80€ phones.

Hope the feature will be back soon.. The only reason I'm not using windows 10 on my 930 :|

Perhaps this is an issue with the OS. There is not a single app that works in stereo for me in W10M like it did in WP8.

in my 930 i was simply recording and its true if you are recording at 4k you do get stereo :D. ... but they seriously have to bring back the force stereo on option for all resolutions... :|

on call: using speaker other end can't hear you're voice.
WhatsApp: you can't record sound.
voice recorder: you can't record sound.
camera: while video recording you hear low I mean very very low voice...on win8.1 you can record u r video with voice but when you use vertical or vertical front camera you can't...

if abv r true welcome to microphone failure club...download Lumia phone test application then check which of 4 microphone is failure...mostly it would be 3 &4(soldered on motherboard).

solution:
if u r covered by warranty give it to service guy and argue to change whole motherboard because even if he change microphone many experiencing same issue again and again.
no warranty sell it.
don't want to sell change microphone again and again.

Hmm im not sure if they changed motherboard for me or the mics :3 how long does it take for it to fail again?

not working dude. still mono audio. doesn't like lumia camera app got wide, clarity & stereo sound from all microphone source.

i'm say again this is not hardware failure etc etc. the problem coming if used wm10! after rollback again to wp8.1 & use Lumia Camera app there are no problem aboud sound quality in record video !

was really hoping that the latest build would solve the stereo issue, recording in mono really sucks, not to mention sounding really amateurish, particularly on a 1020.

Finally gathered the courage and installed W10M on my Lumia 1020, the build 10586.107. Otherwise I like it a lot, more functionality, fast to use, but soon I noticed it also, that both the new Windows Camera and the old Lumia Camera record only monaural audio.

Folks if you are running .122 you can now install Lumia camera classic. The sound recording is way way better. On my 930 with windows camera at 1080p the sound was recorded at 192kbps and 1 channel mono. With Lumia camera classic the sound was recorded at 440kbps and 2 channel stereo. Although no 4k recording.with LCC

Good to know! I haven't put .122 on my Icon yet, but I will check it out this weekend. I had to stop recording video on it, because it sounded like crap.

who the heck cares for 4k, 1080p is still standard. The sound on recordings is so important for me, damn if only I knew, last week I was at a concert of trance (ASOT 15 years w/ Armin van Buuren). All the recordings were crap.

Even with the latest WM10 build, my 930 records only with mono audio. So stupid. Much better with 8.1, so I will stay there.

I suspect that Microsoft released stack firmwares along with insider builds. So it doesn't read the info from the components fully. Do the new Lumia devices have this problem running these builds?

Hopefully, when WM10 will come officially, a new firmware will come along to correct Microsoft Camera. But this is just a thought.

I'm 100% positive there won't be a new firmware for the 1020, as there wasn't even a proper Denim fimware for the 1020 (Cyan to Denim update was just a change in name)

Same issue on my 920: only mono audio in Windows Camera (with 8.1 I had a stereo track instead)

I can't believe that it's still issue. Still no rich recording in W10?

Biggest pain in the butt with Windows 10, such a basic function, you really would think they would work on the basics of the phone, rather than playing with apps, cummon Microsoft, get the basics first.
They already know all the hardware specs, manufacturers etc (there aren't all that many for mobile devices).
If they can make drivers work on a HUGE variety of computers, why not make them work on so few on mobile devices? It's only logical to walk before you can run.
It's the basic functions we want (and bought the phone for initially), why "tempt" us in, then screw us up after the first update.

I also confirm this.

In the 930 and 950Xl I can confirm we still only have stereo on the latest build 10.0.14393.3 :-(

The audio is Stereo 192kb/s

Which means...we have 4 Haac mic's for nothing...

The surround option was so great in the W8.1... specially with moving objects passing around the phone!!!

Maybe we should concentrate in the feedback hub in order to upvote for the solution.

Update, after a couple of months of 10, I am back to 8.1 after downgrading.
Simply can't live with the sound recording issues, some apps refusing to record in stereo and others unable to record while the screensaver is active. Otherwise 10 was fine and looks better, but the drawbacks too annoying.
These problems have put me off the Lumia950, which is currently being dumped pricewise. Will it be the last Lumia made?
Damn, the 41MP pureview with stereo haac mics was such a promising step, but is a fading memory now.
