Planning on updating my Nokia Lumia 920 to w10 preview. Is it worth it?
- I'm planning on updating my Nokia Lumia 920 to w10 preview. What are your suggestion should I do it or it's not worth it??
I'm really board of 8.1 and lack of basic features. I tried updating to w10 more like a year ago through Windows Insider app by selecting fast ring and got my phone bricked. Phone got stuck in a boot loop and eventually had to flash it with Recovery tool to get it to work and lost everything which wasn't synced to the cloud. Since I lost everything I gave it one more try and successfully got w10. I played for few hour before going back to 8.1 coz messages weren't syncing neither my apps so installed 8.1 and got most of my stuff back. I liked w10 but battery drain was crazy so that was also a reason to revert back to 8.1 developers preview. It had the missing basic features that were missing from 8.1 which makes your everyday life a lot easier. Those features are the reason I want to go back to w10 but need every advice I can get before taking any step and don't tell me to upgrade phone rather than OS coz I dnt have any money at all. So unless you are willing to buy it for me don't suggest me a new phone and even if I do had money I would go for Samsung S7 Edge to finally get a peaceful life.
Anyone with 920 with w10 preview? Plz share your experience so I can decide whether to update or not.
Thanx all in advance... <304-29-2016 07:12 AMLike 0 - Oh boy go to town, latest builds you can get on 920 are pretty stable on majority of phones.
But a warning if you don't know, the 10586 builds are the last ones you can get as 920 will not be getting W10 officially.- Share

- I'm using hardware that won't officially get Windows 10 and had a few updates as an insider. It's been remarkably stable this year and I've not had to regress to 8 at all. 2015 versions weren't as great for many people - perhaps you included. As you've got your past experience of data loss etc, you could now approach it - if you'd like of course - after backing everything up. There are no guarantees for any of us that we won't brick our devices, whichever preview build we may be running. But the preview versions are generally regarded as very good now and they are more like polished release versions than those from 2015. I've really enjoyed invigorating my old device, having felt that I wanted something fresh but loved the hardware I used, and 10 has supported that aim: it sounds like you're after something similar and I'd recommend that you explore it.

- If you use Insider on the Release Ring, the same version is fetched as the recent public Upgrade received by these phones (10.0.10586.xxx): Phones Eligible for Windows 10 Mobile Official.
If your phone is not on the supported list, then 10586.xxx (Threshold) is the end of the line. You may as well use Insider and select Production to un-enroll your phone from Insider, but at least you have W10M. WaaS (Windows as a Service) will deliver future updates within Threshold to you without any Insider access required.
Check out this thread: Windows Insider Testing and You [Recommended Guidelines]
For right now, Windows Device Recovery Tool is only flashing 8.1 to models that did not launch with 10 so it is the way to revert if you don't care for W10M: How can I recover/reset/restore my phone software?04-30-2016 11:32 AMLike 0 - I found it pretty good but fairly slow.

Thanx all in advance... <3- Before upgrading, make sure your time, date and region settings are correct
- Also, do a backup of content like photos, documents and music, either online or on a pc
- Remove content so there is enough space for the upgrade
- Install windows insider app and select release ring
- Update while your phone is charging
- After the first update, check that date, region and time settings are correct and then check for updates again
- Disable auto update of store apps
- After update of OS is finished, check for app updates in store and download store app update first. Then others a few at a time
For better battery:
- Once all apps have been updated, go to settings > privacy > background apps and disable those you don't need to run in background
- Unlink skype from messaging in the messaging app.
- Disable auto upload of photos and videos to onedrive in the photos app if you don't use it
- Once all this is done, do a restart
let the update process complete, For a couple of days the battery use will be high as the phone settles down- Share

Also, in settings > privacy, go through all those settings in the privacy segment and check which apps can use what service. For example word can access camera or microphone or call history. Disable those you believe are not needed
Pay special attention to what can access location as that can also lead to battery drain05-05-2016 11:33 PMLike 0 - it was fine until it updated again n now battery is draining like a bucket of water without a bottom. anyway to fix it? phone is also really extremely hot to even hold. thinking of getting to slow ring. while charging the battery starts draining if i use it was fine last night i put it on charge n it was 100% i woke up with phone hot n battery around 30% like wtf it was on charging n no one used it. also my display is consuming 60% of the battery n OS is between 40-50%.
Help plz05-06-2016 10:20 AMLike 0 - it was fine until it updated again n now battery is draining like a bucket of water without a bottom. anyway to fix it? phone is also really extremely hot to even hold. thinking of getting to slow ring. while charging the battery starts draining if i use it was fine last night i put it on charge n it was 100% i woke up with phone hot n battery around 30% like wtf it was on charging n no one used it. also my display is consuming 60% of the battery n OS is between 40-50%.

- Phones are as noteooks, needs a couple of days for syncing caching and resuming. Keep it plugged all night always.
My 650 after 2 days reached a full work day battery lasting: very intensive use 12 hrs, normal 18 hrs, moderate 24hrs- Share

You're supposed to be on production or release ring, going to slow or fast ring will not do anything as those are not meant for 920. So stay in production ring. And disable auto update of apps
Confirm once again which apps can run in the background.
Also keep battery saver on all the time- Share

- I do not have a Lumia 920 but I sported a Lumia 822 for close to three years and it has identical internals so should give me a good idea on how w10m will run on the 920.
I first installed w10m on my Lumia 822 last September and the performance for lack of a better word was abhorrent. However I knew that it was a technical preview so I did not rant about it.
With every new build performance has improved until build .36 which for me was suitable already as a daily driver.
Fast forward to April this year, I got myself a new Lumia 640 and installed w10m immediately and performance is quite revelatory.
I can see why MS opted to not release w10m for devices with S4 chip because frankly it was just not up to snuff.
If you can find a Lumia 640 cheap, I recommend you get yourself one and be happy.- Share

- Well it looks like it has settled down a bit battery timing is not great as it was before but 920 never had a great battery life either. The features im getting now are worth for less battery timing coz now apps open a lot faster n im able to do all the things I need to do in less time so less using my phone as now I can reply to sms and post directly from my lock screen and even dnt have to unlock it to do that so I'm sticking with this. Another guy gave me a lot of tips which are on my other post same like this which really helped through this process. I am saving up for a big jump to Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or S7 Edge coz wp is not there yet and is very slow progress...
