Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update 10.0.14393.5 in Lumia 1520 - Improved Battery life & no heating

On 28th July , I had successfully installed 14393.5 over 10586.494 on my Lumia 1520. Initially I had Heating issue and quick Battery drain. As planned I had waited couple of days and did some tweaks. WOW! now the heating issue is almost non-existent and Battery is holding more than 30 hours (my kind of usage). Much more than on 10586.494 build. On Windowsphone 8 days it was more than 50 hours and in Windowsphone 8.1 it was close to 40 hours.

Please find the attached screen shots for your reference.

I did the following tweaks to solve the heating and battery draining issue.

  1. After a lot of observation, I had came to a conclusion that the heating issue is caused due to opening and working on heavy apps, like heavy games, Facebook (Beta), Messenger, WhatsApp, etc. Heating means rapid battery drain.
  2. After the 14393.5 update and playing with the updated OS for some 30 mins, I kept the phone idle without using any apps (even though used for Phone Calls and couple of SMSs) for couple of hours
  3. Then I soft-reset the device (Volume down + Power button)
  4. After restart I uninstalled all the heavy apps mentioned above after taking respective backups (like WhatsApp)
  5. Then again soft-reset the device (Volume down + Power button)
  6. After restarting installed all apps uninstalled in the previous step
  7. Once again soft-reset the device (Volume down + Power button) for the final time.

Since then my battery is hanging for much longer time and heating issue is almost non-existent (still playing Asphalt 8 and SBK heats up the device as it was in 8.1 era)

This is tested with Lumia 1520 only. Tomorrow better halves Lumia 640XL may receive Anniversary Update officially. I will update the results of the same after couple of days.

Cheers!

Vinu

Just to add

A few things you can try out:
  1. Check settings >system > battery > which apps are using the most energy?
  2. Again, in battery section, which apps can run in the background? Can you disable those you don't need? Keep messaging enabled to run in background
  3. In battery section, you can also set up battery saver to kick in when the battery reaches a certain percentage. I keep mine on 100% so it's always on battery saver mode
  4. In mail app, how often do you have mails to sync? Generally the longer the time period, the less the battery usage
  5. What about brightness settings? Is it on high or auto? Auto is better than a fixed setting
  6. If you find that messaging app uses a lot of battery, this could be because it's linked with skype. Go to messaging app, settings and unlink skype
  7. In photos app, do you have auto upload of photos enabled? If yes, try to not upload high res photos and videos unless you are charging the phone and on wifi
  8. When you use some apps that are not data heavy like whatsapp or mail, you can use a lower network speed like 2G. It's what I do usually. I only use LTE when I have to use 6tag
  9. If you're using edge for basic browsing, you could try using UC browser. Not only does it use less data but you can also disable images which means you save even more on data. The less data your phone has to receive, the less the energy used
  10. In settings > privacy - check each of those settings to see which apps can use what. For example I can't understand why Word would need to access location info so I disabled that. There might be apps using services that they are not meant to use
  11. Finally, keep wifi/cellular off when you don't need to have them on. The toggles in action centre are pretty fast so it doesn't take much time in switching internet on/off
  12. Disable auto update of apps, you only update when you are ready and not when you are in need of critical things
  13. For insider rings – reduce the amount of telemetry and feedback that you send – this can have a big impact
  14. If you have Cortana tile pinned to start screen, remove it

Hope this helps you

Good, but I don't want to cut down on anything that I was using since 8.1 days. Yes 20% battery saver settings is there since 8.1. But haven't changed any settings since Windows 10 Mobile update. Still I'm getting good battery backup

my list is for the case if you had unknown battery drains or you just want to extend it as far as possible

I don't believe in turning off features or restricting WIFI, 4G, 3G, 2G, etc for gaining battery endurance. You bought the phone as Windowsphone 8 and it worked flawlessly with all features on as it is. Today when you are in Windows 10 mobile, it should deliver accordingly.

That's like changing your honda compact car engine with a chevy V8 compressor, and asking for same fuel mileage

This version is buttery smooth too. Phone actually last 24hours with moderate use. I wonder what sacrifices they had to make.

So it looks like windows 10 mobile with working features was an year late on Mobile. is that a decent assessment? that sh*&) they sent out last year was garbage.

For everyone here, I'm BEGGING, pleeeease do a clean install of this update. Just start fresh, its OK. SHHHHH shhhhh its ok. Youll survive. If you have game info etc that is life threatening to lose, then do a backup. But start fresh, use for a couple of days and THEN restore from that backup and see the difference. BTW, edit to that: they changed the backup format, so backup > update > backup > restore via settings > start there for 48hrs. Soooo many issues are solved by wiping your phone. This goes for iOS and Droid as well. They get clogged and cluttered.

I've changed the registry of my Ativ SE so that it appears to be a Lumia phone; this way I can install Windows 10; latest fast ring build has amazing battery life!! This is such a great OS!!! (and phone!)

But don't ask me to drive the car at 20 mph in higher gear and do lift and coast to achieve 1.2's mileage. Even with Chevy V8 it should not stop in between with an empty tank. That is my requirement.

Give it 2 days for sync, caching and updating, as every build

Would this adjustment impact those of us running HTC Ones? I ask because I've been able to install W10M insider loads, but I can't seem to get the "anniversary" update.

The picture ref'd with OS build 14393.5, is currently the latest build, thus the Anniversary Update (for mobile).
