Windows 10 build 14959 now available for Insiders on PC and Mobile | Windows Central

What?s new in Build 14959

Unified Update Platform: This build for Mobile is being published using our new update publishing system called Unified Update Platform (UUP). For more information on UUP ? check out this blog post from Bill.

Controlling the Display Scaling of your Virtual Machines (PC): We?ve heard your feedback that Hyper-V Virtual Machines sometimes aren?t scaled as you?d expect, so we?ve added a new Zoom option in the View menu, where you can override the default scaling and set it to 100, 125, 150 or 200 ? whichever matches your preference. Along the way, we also fixed an issue where certain VMs wouldn?t display the remote desktop connection bar after entering full screen mode. We are still refining the experience so there might be some rough edges. For example, although we added zoom levels to handle high DPI more gracefully, when zooming you won?t be able to see the VM?s whole screen without scrolling.

Other improvements and fixes for PC

  1. We fixed an issue for Insiders resulting in the automatic brightness setting unexpectedly being turned off after upgrading. In doing so, we?ve re-enabled automatic brightness adjust for users that have never changed their auto-brightness setting. If you have already manually configured your auto-brightness setting, then this fix will not affect you. If you would like to enable or disable automatic brightness adjustment, please go to Settings > System > Display, where you can adjust your preferences.
  2. We fixed an issue Insiders on domain connected PCs may have experienced where login might fail when the computer was disconnected from its domain network.
  3. We fixed an issue resulting in certain apps, such as Outlook Mail and Calendar, failing to update for some Insiders with the error code 0x800700B7.
  4. We fixed an issue for Insiders with certain device models where ejecting an SD card might result in a system crash.
  5. We fixed an issue where disliking one of the Spotlight lock screen images would show the new image immediately, followed by a transition animation from the previous image to the new image.
  6. We fixed an issue where launching an app from another app while in Tablet mode no longer launched it side by side, and instead launched it fullscreen (for example, when launching a web link from the MSN News app).

Other improvements and fixes for Mobile

  1. The data usage page in Settings via Settings > Network & wireless > Data usage has been updated with performance and UI improvements.
  2. Updated data settings usage
  3. We fixed issues preventing Insiders from adding cards to Wallet and paying using tap to pay.
  4. We fixed an issue resulting in being unexpectedly able to close Start in the task switcher.
  5. We fixed an issue resulting in certain options for default calling app via Settings > System > Phone > Default apps from being unexpectedly missing.
  6. We fixed an issue causing apps that play media in the background, such as Groove Music, to stop when Battery Saver turns on.
  7. We fixed an issue Insiders may have experienced where the phone would get into a state where copy/paste wouldn?t work until the device had been restarted.
  8. We fixed an issue where Settings might hang after unchecking ?Let apps automatically use this VPN connection? in VPN Settings.

Known issues for PC

  1. If you have a 3rd party antivirus product installed on your PC ? your PC might not be able to complete the update to this build and roll-back to the previous build.
  2. We?re aware of an issue where Internet Explorer may crash a few seconds after launch and working.

Known issues for Mobile

  1. If you used the previous ?date change? workaround to update to Build 14951 or Build 14955: Please don?t use it any longer! The Microsoft account (MSA) ticket on your device needs to expire and then you?ll be offered today?s build. If you changed your date by 30 years? you?ll want to do a device reset.
  2. You will be unable to install additional languages, keyboards, and speech packs on your phone for the next few weeks. If you have existing languages, keyboards, and speech packs installed ? they will carry over when you update to new builds. You just can?t install any new ones. If you do a hard reset of your phone on these builds ? you will also be unable to install additional languages, keyboards, and speech packs. You can use Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows 10 Mobile, install any languages, keyboards, and speech packs you need and then update to the latest build in the Fast ring as a workaround.

This build and version is the latest Redstone 2 build in testing for Mobile Insiders on the Fast Ring.

Issues? Bugs? Solutions? For all things build 14955, discuss it here.

Is your device behaving oddly, is something just not right? This is the place for discussion of software and hardware issues!
[TIP]Here is some useful information you may find yourself needing.
Some issues with responsiveness and app delays can be resolved by either restarting your phone or performing a Soft Reset.

If things get a bit more serious, you may opt to perform a hard reset or software reset.

Lastly, if things really get serious, you may need the Windows Device Recovery Tool to recover your phone back to working order - head over to the Microsoft FAQ Page for more information.

Make sure you check the official Windows 10 Mobile Support Page as well for some of the most common tips and trouble shooting guides.[/TIP]
[INFO]Restarting your phone involves turning it off and then turning it on again. Turn off your phone by pressing the power button until you are prompted to "Slide down to power off". Turn your phone on again by pressing the power button until it vibrates.

A soft reset is similar to pressing the reset button in PCs and has the same effect as pulling out the battery of your phone and then putting it back in. For phones with non-removable batteries, press the volume down and power button together until your phone restarts. Be aware that when using Windows 10, the voume down and power button combination will also launch Windows Feedback. Just continue to hold down the buttons for a full 10 seconds in order to trigger the soft reset. For phones with removable batteries, you can either opt for the button combination or remove the battery and then return it.

A hard reset or a software reset will reformat your phone by removing all the user information leaving only the bare OS and firmware currently installed in your phone. It does erase data so you should always keep a good backup of your phone just in case you have to resort to this option.

The software reset can be done by going to your phone Settings > System > About > tap on "Reset your phone." You will be prompted once before doing this just to be sure. Be sure, also, to have everything backed up since there would be no way to recover all of your files.

The hard reset accomplishes the same thing as the software reset, but can be accomplished when the phone is non-responsive and you are unable to enter into settings. To perform the Hard Reset, "Power off the phone > hold Volume Down > press Power > keep holding Volume Down until you see the exclamation (!) screen, then immediately release the Volume Down. Now tap Volume Up / Volume Down / Power / Volume Down. You should see the spinning gears and your phone will reflash the last OS version held in recovery.

The Windows Device Recovery Tool is the final option, for example for "bricked" phones that would no longer turn on, be charged, etc. This can be used to either roll back to a previous OS version or force an update to a more current OS version[/INFO]
Remember, when reporting bugs be descriptive! The more information you give, the better the chance someone will be able to help you.

What OS version? Any special conditions that should be noted? What were you doing? What is the result? Any error codes or messages given? What have you tried for solutions? What variant of the phone are you using? Single SIM or Dual SIM?

Please describe as much as possible about the bug so others may try and replicate the bug and don't make suggestions for solutions that you have already tried which have failed.
[INFO]When reporting bugs/issues, please also use the Windows Feedback app to report issues directly to Microsoft. Microsoft don't actively read forums looking for people reporting issues when they have a data collection system built right into the operating system. They use WF to analyse numbers and prioritise fixes (issues with more reports, get sorted quicker).

"You can use the Windows Feedback app to tell us which features you love about your Lumia with Windows 10, or when something could be better.
1.To launch the app, swipe over to the App list, and then select Windows Feedback.
2.See if someone else has given similar feedback by entering the topic, such as Microsoft OneDrive.
3.If you find similar feedback, tap the Upvote or tap on the feedback to open it, write the problem details to Add details-field and tap Send.
4.To narrow your search to a specific topic, you can filter the results by picking the category that matches your feedback the closest. For example, for feedback about the Microsoft OneDrive, select Apps and Games > OneDrive.
5.If you don’t find any similar feedback, tap + to add new feedback. Select the correct category and subcategory from the dropdown-list.
6.Enter your feedback (the more details the better!), add a screenshot if you can, and tap Send.
7.Your feedback will automatically upload when you are charging your phone and connected to Wi-Fi, but you can also upload the feedback manually by tapping … > Upload feedback data."

Outlook weirdness. Whenever I open Outlook, the dots to indicate that it's doing something are continuously going across the top of the screen. It seems to be working ok, but the first few times I found myself staring and waiting for it to finish. Now I'm ignoring it, as mail seems to come in and go out normally, it''s just the animation that stays there forever...

Jumped back into the insider builds now, the AU (on my L950) is just as buggy if not more so that the Insider versions.

"Add an appointment" kills Cortana :unhappy:
Still get the occasional "No internet" on wifi, even though it's connected. Switching on/off seems to clear it.
A vpn connection I created a while back won't connect (Cisco AnyConnect), haven't tried re-creating it yet.
Not getting email notifications on my Band 2

So far haven't got any sudden battery drains

More camera issues are back. It's creating low quality .thumb files when taking photos, instead of high quality .jpg files. This is a very important function for me.

I'm having a severe overheat issue with my Lumia 950 XL. I jumped to this build from the latest on production and haven't reset the phone since I was in the few last Restone1 builds.

So, am I the only one with that problem? Standby battery is good, but in use wifi on/off phones overheats and battery goes away pretty quickly. I'm asking about this before software resetting the phone.

I have just come from production also, but am not having any issues at all so far, certainly not any heat issues. Though if I have the camera issue that was mentioned, I'll be a little less happy. Will check this in a bit.

Thank you for this!

I've been watching peoples reactions to these new builds. I don't want to jump on them just yet. Only thing that got me curious is someone mentioning it runs faster than the anniversary update.

But there still isn't any feature that is going to bring me onboard and deal with all the issues.

They also do a lot of data gathering which is likely not going to help battery. I like to have my diagnostics set to basic not full. Insiders have no choice.

If you want you can leave the insider program and restart. Then you can turn off all the diagnostics. Of course that's not MS' intent, and you won't be able to give them any feedback at all. They require that you enable diagnostics at least at 'medium' (?) level before you're allowed to post in the feedback hub.

After a soft reset my problems are the same. I just installed the bare apps and the phone overheats whenever I turn the screen on. Since I will be on the road starting tonight for a few days I'm going back production.

About performance I didn't notice a difference when the phone wasn't throttling; standby time battery was pretty close to production (close enough to say it was the same).

Battery time during use was awful, I went from 80% to 10% in about 1 hour and half of sporadic use (Groupme, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, a few SMS, Email, I bought something in a webpage and a phone call of 15 minutes.). After all that I would expect around 50 % of battery life on the production build.

I might try my luck again around November 9.
