General changes, improvements, and fixes for Mobile

  • This build includes all the improvements from KB4038788.
  • In preparation for the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the product version number has been updated to 1709 just like PC.
  • We fixed an issue where, on powering the screen off/on, high demand for CPU could cause several apps to crash. Background processing of photos is an example of high CPU demand. In a photo shoot session, you may have seen the Camera app crash.
  • We fixed an issue with the Messaging app where conversation text was displayed incorrectly. Thanks to our Insiders that quickly highlighted this issue.


This build and version is the latest Redstone 3 (?) build in testing for Mobile Insiders on the Fast Ring.

[TIP]Here is some useful information you may find yourself needing.
Some issues with responsiveness and app delays can be resolved by either restarting your phone or performing a Soft Reset.

If things get a bit more serious, you may opt to perform a hard reset or software reset.

Lastly, if things really get serious, you may need the Windows Device Recovery Tool to recover your phone back to working order - head over to the Microsoft FAQ Page for more information.

[INFO]Restarting your phone involves turning it off and then turning it on again. Turn off your phone by pressing the power button until you are prompted to "Slide down to power off". Turn your phone on again by pressing the power button until it vibrates.

A soft reset is similar to pressing the reset button in PCs and has the same effect as pulling out the battery of your phone and then putting it back in. For phones with non-removable batteries, press the volume down and power button together until your phone restarts. Be aware that when using Windows 10, the voume down and power button combination will also launch Windows Feedback. Just continue to hold down the buttons for a full 10 seconds in order to trigger the soft reset. For phones with removable batteries, you can either opt for the button combination or remove the battery and then return it.

A hard reset or a software reset will reformat your phone by removing all the user information leaving only the bare OS and firmware currently installed in your phone. It does erase data so you should always keep a good backup of your phone just in case you have to resort to this option.

The software reset can be done by going to your phone Settings > System > About > tap on "Reset your phone." You will be prompted once before doing this just to be sure. Be sure, also, to have everything backed up since there would be no way to recover all of your files.

The hard reset accomplishes the same thing as the software reset, but can be accomplished when the phone is non-responsive and you are unable to enter into settings. To perform the Hard Reset, "Power off the phone > hold Volume Down > press Power > keep holding Volume Down until you see the exclamation (!) screen, then immediately release the Volume Down. Now tap Volume Up / Volume Down / Power / Volume Down. You should see the spinning gears and your phone will reflash the last OS version held in recovery.

The Windows Device Recovery Tool is the final option, for example for "bricked" phones that would no longer turn on, be charged, etc. This can be used to either roll back to a previous OS version or force an update to a more current OS version[/INFO]
Remember, when reporting bugs be descriptive! The more information you give, the better the chance someone will be able to help you.

What OS version? Any special conditions that should be noted? What were you doing? What is the result? Any error codes or messages given? What have you tried for solutions? What variant of the phone are you using? Single SIM or Dual SIM?

Please describe as much as possible about the bug so others may try and replicate the bug and don't make suggestions for solutions that you have already tried which have failed.
[INFO]When reporting bugs/issues, please also use the Windows Feedback app to report issues directly to Microsoft. Microsoft don't actively read forums looking for people reporting issues when they have a data collection system built right into the operating system. They use WF to analyse numbers and prioritise fixes (issues with more reports, get sorted quicker).

1.To launch the app, swipe over to the App list, and then select Windows Feedback.
2.See if someone else has given similar feedback by entering the topic, such as Microsoft OneDrive.
3.If you find similar feedback, tap the Upvote or tap on the feedback to open it, write the problem details to Add details-field and tap Send.
4.To narrow your search to a specific topic, you can filter the results by picking the category that matches your feedback the closest. For example, for feedback about the Microsoft OneDrive, select Apps and Games > OneDrive.
5.If you don’t find any similar feedback, tap + to add new feedback. Select the correct category and subcategory from the dropdown-list.
6.Enter your feedback (the more details the better!), add a screenshot if you can, and tap Send.

I think this is the fix for the main reason for my 950XL to randomly reset everytime I power it on to unlock it.

I have it installed and it seems okay so far.

I downloaded 15252 this morning, and it seemed to just eat my battery... had to put my 950XL on the charger after about 4-5hrs after the update. Could be that it was just a fluke, we'll see - battery life has been pretty good.

This build has the same BT issue of showing CONNECTED when the BT device is off. In that state, audio is routed to the non-existent BT device and as a result the phone does not ring or notify.

I believe what is happening is that if the phone goes to sleep in the connected state, it sometimes loses track of the connection status, which is NOT refreshed the next time the BT device is available. This morning I tested BT by connecting to my BT earpiece and then just leaving the phone alone. A couple minutes after the screen turned off, my earpiece announced that the phone was disconnected. When I turned the screen on, the BT icon was still present but the earpiece was still not connected. Power cycling the earpiece did NOT restore connection.

This earpiece works flawlessly with my Android phone, my PC and a two way radio I have that has BT. The only issue is with the L950. And since I can't upvote my own feedback I guess all I can do is wait for MS to get with it.

Only issue I have. Though I believe its my Bluetooth headphones. It never seem to connect properly to play music through headphones in most cases I have to reconnect my Bluetooth headphones for it to list music on the list to play. Though this been like this since WM10 first came out "shrugs"

Ya Ive tried that. It never fixes it. SO when it does that I just turn off my headphones and turn it back on to make it reconnect to my phone usually works fine once I connect it the second time. Sometimes the first time connecting it shows music on the list when connected Bluetooth.

Well, today my alarms did not work.

But it hasn't soft reset once yet when powering on my phone to unlock it.

Swings and roundabouts it seems.

As another update, one whole day without any soft resets when powering on the phone. But I had one random soft reset. So it isn't quite there yet. But it's getting close.

Haven't had too many issues since I installed this build yesterday afternoon but I can echo @mtf1380's comment that battery life is not as good as previous builds. In addition, Outlook Calendar is still randomly replacing my "0 minute" reminder with "None" on my recurring appointment. I even tried deleting the appointment entirely and re-doing it. Same result: at some random point in time, the reminder that I have set for 0 minutes will be replaced with "None", so I do not get a reminder at all. I have to check it every day to make sure it's still set to "0 minutes".

Working really well on my 950. No issues. Does drain a bit, but maybe it needs some time. Updated Skype to 12.4 seems to have improved the battery drain rate.

I really hope the heating stops, I use photos app a lot and camera too - perhaps the solved bugs will help resolve some strange situations I've had with the 950 (like battery drained within 6 hours and a hot-stone phone).

I mentioned that I dropped out of bothering with the fast ring updates at 15237 after deciding that uninstalling apps and clearing message history was not worth the effort when updates were needing 1.2Gb of space to install.

I was surprised to see that 15252 has auto-installed over the weekend, meaning the download would have been relatively small compared to those at 15237 and before.

My question, is there a way to see the size of the update before the pain of creating space, downloading and then being told you need to find more space?

You can check for updates while on your mobile data connection (and not on WiFi). It will state something like "This download is xx.x MB in size. Do you want to download it?"
