Poor battery

I just received a new Dell Venue Pro running Windows 7. Started off with a full charge and after 3 hours (1 phone call, 1 text), the battery is showing 1/2 life. Is this normal? Any suggestions on extending the life?

Also, how do I check for apps that are running in the background?
