Why doesn't the keyboard open when hitting the search key?

Because opening the keyboard every time would block Bing Vision, Bing Music, Local Scout ect, and force people to click back to remove keyboard to see them. That would serve to assume people always want to do a text search.

-- I should have tested before posting, but the keyboard does not cover the other functions. This would be nice to have the keyboard pop up automatically. Although I think Bing has a thing for showing the Bing Images ;p

Did you read the posts in this thread? It isn't an issue at all because there are more things to do than just search and there are more ways to search than just hitting search, most of which are somewhat faster.

Did you read the posts in this thread? I was fully aware of the fact that there are other options besides Bing search on the 'search' page (it has already been discussed). I don't really think that makes much of a difference since the other secondary options are still available with the keyboard open.

Also, your last line ("most of which are somewhat faster") is exactly my point.

In any case, I'm starting to regret that I ever posted this thread...

If you have a Windows Phone, please look at it again to see that all the options are still there with the keyboard open.

I don't think this is a major issue, but I think it would be nice to have something similar to the search page on the iphone. One swipe and you start typing, plus it searches the phone and the web. I hope WP has adds similar functionality to Bing search in WP 8.

I know right, that's most of the reason why I hit search. If I actually want to search something I just use the bar in IE since its already open most of the time.

lol you are right, I didn't realize. That would be something nice to have show up by default then.

Not really. It would make as much sense as having the keyboard open immediately when you launch IE9, open a conversation, open an Office document, etc.

Those aren't the same. With Bing it would only cover part of an image that serves only to be nice to look at. Opening it up in the cases you stated would hinder workflow as it would cover important text/info and have to assume where you want to start typing.

Hitting search for most typically means they want to type something into a blank search box.

The solution, as always, is simple. Provide an option for the users who would rather get straight to the search. Having the keyboard minimised allows search to display the Bing image and random facts along with accentuating the other features like Local Scout, but that's not what everyone wants. A simple checkbox in settings to enable auto-keyboard under search will not hurt anyone.

But what am I saying, I'm the guy who remapped his search key to connectivity toggles.

It surprises me that everyone missed the main reason why the keyboard doesn't pop up. With voice command on board its not needed. Just tap and hold the Windows key and say find _____ and your done. Who needs a keyboard. Tapping the magnifying glass is for a more in depth search and should only be used if you want to see the search screen and chose from the options all other searches should be done through VC. I think this is Microsoft's intention they are getting away from people having to type everything in to a text box.

While true, I am not typically in an environment where talking to my phone all the time is best. I prefer to silently use my phone when around others unless fielding a phone call.

I got ya... People are different and options are good. Maybe an option in settings would work. A simple check box that lets you chose to open the keyboard every time you open search. For me I like it the way it is so I hope they don't force a change on us.

I'm sorry Dave but when my last Optimus 7 screen died, I could only use the phone one way. Hold the Seach button to open Bing and Hold the Windows one to launch the Tell Me stuff.

it's really bad, I have to spend 15 minutes to open hotmail, because even when I said open hotmail clearly it search for open hotmail instead of just launching the app. Impossible to find the name of a Hispanic girl without launching porn all the time, I was just trying to call my sister, its annoying and doesn't work.

I use VC for everything I have for years sense the WinMo days. I am used to it. Most people who try it on my phone are amazed how accurate it is. Sad it doesn't work that way for everyone.

I just did the "open hotmail" it worked just fine. I actually find that the VC is pretty good. Not sure why it would take you so long, sometimes thou, if you have a friend with a different nationality you have to relearn how to say their name in order for it to open the contact.... this part needs to get better.

The voice control on WP is better for me than it was on my droid, but it still has trouble with redneck sometimes. If only Microsoft and Google would hire more people from the deep south....
