alphabet 'E' near the operator name on top of the screen

can anyone see the alphabet 'E' on top of the screen while pushing down the action center just alongside the operator name? also there's no symbol for phone data enabled or disabled..
Also is the 'E' same as EDGE if yes, then why not my operator deducts the amount from my balance.. because i dnt have any data pack enabled

Yes E is EDGE (2G).

it si just to indicate the mode that you are in it will be H or H+ or LTE if you are in 3G mode or LTE mode... since you are in 2G it is a quick reminder that you are in 2G that is all.......
