Is windows phone 8.1 the death of iOS?

IOS user base is too loyal for WP to ever kill it. Or any mobile OS for that matter. I do believe WP8.1 will help slowly (very slowly) grow the market share as many of the features were needed and opening it up more to developers also will help. But it will never kill IOS

Last year, IOS experienced a drop in market share. While windows phone bridged the gap.
The difference between Android and iOS is far greater than that of iOS and WP.

That can definitely happen once WP gets all the apps available in iOS. Till then MS would definitely give them tough competition with the launch of WP8.1 but the death of iOS ain't gonna be as simple as Black Berry.

On a long enough time scale, iOS could be relegated to a smallish percentage of the market, roughly equal to OSX in the PC market. Apple's self-imposed limits are attractive to a certain subset of people, who really like the Apple way of doing things.

We are already seeing that Tim Cook will not allow that to happen, and is diluting the laser focus of Apple's products to appeal to a larger subset of people. Apple is building two different sizes of iPad now, and the rumor mill is discussing at least two different iPhone models as well.

In the end, Apple will find themselves either limit themselves to that small market, or else the die-hards will complain that Apple has "lost it's soul" as it expands into different directions as they attempt to appeal to an ever larger user-base.

Apple (in the USA) represents status like Mercedes Benz; Rolex and Dom Perignon and because of that as well as all of the iPods that were sold before any competitors appeared on the market will prevent an iOs free fall any time soon.

Not much?

All this will do is get rid of any chance of a 3rd place competition and place MSFT in a really good position to aim for 2nd position by 2016 as planned 3 years ago.

and how do you figure not much? People on the low end don't buy phones for the same reasons as people on the high end and since the 520 is the top selling phone for its price range, it could ear away at it.

Hum cumming from a guy who uses a Android on a WP forum......................Okay

But no it would never "kill" Ios or Droid, and no you would not want it to.
WP needs the competition, just like the others.
So they can and must innovate to keep ahead on each other.
