I'm really hoping that they optimise the OS a lot for older devices, because all those new features have the possibility to create a tonne of lag and crashes (cough iOS 7 cough). Not to mention most of the phones we have currently are on dual-core, 2-year old chipsets

Don't worry. This is one of the things WP excels. 8.1 will be well optimized from 520 to 1520.

I think performance will be fine. The lumia 630/635 has a snapdragon 400 processor running at 1.2ghz. Which is probably equal to the 1.5ghz S4.

The s4 plus is actually faster than s400. And we have s4, so old devices should perform the same as s400 if not faster.
