My wife and I currently use HTC 8X phones. Our contract with Verizon ends in a few days. We really like the Lumia Icon, especially its camera, but I worry about Verizon's lack of any sort of commitment towards WP. So, would you recommend we go ahead with the Lumia Icon or should we switch to AT&T for the Lumia 830 or the HTC One? No matter which phone we go with, I plan on paying full price so I'm not stuck in any type of long term contract.

    Thanks

Ah, the HTC 8x, it was a wonderful phone while I had it., but I never knew there was so much more in Lumias. The Lumia icon is a great choice, but I do agree with you on the gfact that Verizon has no care for WP. I think you shoyuld switch to AT&T and get the phione of your choice. The lumia 1520 is a great choice I you want a big phone but get a good case! Also, the 830 or 930 is probably the best at this time. (droolin for the DT-903 wireless charging pad). If your on a budget, the 535 is great. Once you go AT&T , there is so much more to chose from!

If you wanna keep Verizon as your carrier I'd definitely recommend the HTC One because not only is the Icon being dropped by Verizon, the HTC already has an official version of 8.1 out of the box pre-installed (the best you'll get on the Icon is the DP on Lumia Black firmware). Not only that but the HTC One has Micro SD expansion and its every bit as solidly built as the Icon.

Get Lumia 1520.3s for each of you. It outdoes the Icon in that it has Glance and microSD support. It's the beastliest Windows Phone out and future proof as it gets at this point.

Get off Verizon. Run don't walk. The 1520.3 is Factory Unlocked. If you want a mainstream carrier, get on T-MoUS. They have a lot of great extras like free texting and data when you travel to other countries and music streaming services not counting towards your data use. And no contract - even post paid is commitment free at the Magenta carrier. The more people you sign up on your service, the cheaper the per person breakdown is.

Coverage not good in your area for T-MoUS? Go with an AT&T mvno like Cricket or Straight Talk.

Save money, save your sanity and enjoy freedom with Factory Unlocked GSM.

Maybe you should also mention that the 1520 is a 6" phablet. Not everybody is happy to carry around a full sized cutting board in their pockets. I, for one, would much rather stick a pen in my left eye and twirl it around repeatedly than ever have to use a phablet device. Obviously, YMMV.

I hope that is only figuratively...

18 or 20 months ago I was using a 2.7" screen on an HP Veer. I swore size was no big deal and I'd never need such a big screen.

Obviously the following is just my experience and anyone is free to have a differing opinion, but... Once you start using larger screens they grow on you. Smaller screens do indeed become unacceptable. I quickly jumped up in screen size only in a pursuit of other specs. Once I crossed the 4.5" threshold though I found my perspective change and small screens just would not serve any longer. But 6"? I still scoffed. I crossed another threshold when I got a 1520. I don't think I could go back and be happy with 4.5" any longer.

IMHO, the screen itself is a desirable feature and well worth the portability issues. P.S.: I don't wear jeans hardly ever... Maybe that makes life with a 6" screen phone easier.

    My Mileage Does Vary.

I feel the same way whenever I'm forced to watch one of those awful Katherine Heigl movies. Ha.

The 1520 phablet is just too big for my tastes. That's why I was leaning towards the Icon, 830, or M8.

I don't know if its just me, but all of those choices are pretty underwhelming. Icon is retired, long wait for 8.1, no glance...830 is a little underpowered and not really a flagship. HTC m8 seems great but heard poor reviews on the camera, which is super important to me. I have a 925 and am definitely waiting til next year to see if they release anything better.

My plan is to dump Verizon when my contract is up and snag an 830 on AT&T. I'm not a huge fan of AT&T but Verizon is really screwing the pooch right now. Where I live AT&T or Verizon are the big dogs coverage wise. Sprint is awful and T-Mo is just ok.

Yeah, I don't like to "HAVE TO USE" anything. But I loved choosing a 1520!

I agree and the camera is really important to us as well. But I really don't want to be stuck with the lackluster 8X camera any longer than I have to. Those phones are pretty much my only option at this point and I don't want to wait for the next Lumia (whenever that may be) only to be disappointed with yet another mid tier or low tier phone.

If you are staying on Verizon, get a used Icon, because the camera is much better than M8. If you go to AT&T, the 1020 is a nice phone. No one has mentioned the I or the A word so I guess you are staying on WP. But, as a long time WP user, and recent user of another OS, I would encourage you to take a look at everything available.

I upgraded from a 925. Main reason, I wanted a better camera. The 1520.3 more than fits that bill.

If you're getting off Verizon it will run LTE on AT&T or T-Mo towers so your carrier choice is wide open. NOTHING out there beats 1520 right now for Windows Phone. Nothing is poised for the future better. No waiting for carrier approval at update time. You would instantly move to 8.1 + Cyan (official, no P4D needed) and most likely 8.1.1 + Denim by the end of the year. The 20MP shooter is great - heap on Qi charging without a jacket, 32GB internal storage, up to 128GB microSD, Snapdragon 800 chipset, 1080p IPS screen + ClearBlack display, Dolby Sound enhancement, Quad microphone best-in-class audio for video shoots, Glance screen enabled and that lasts-all-day-long-no-question-about-it 3400 mAH battery...

I looked at it and thought I must be crazy to NOT get a 1520.3. The way I saw it, it was the only worthy upgrade from one proven workhorse (my 925) to another.

You decide what's best for you, but don't let the size of the thing scare you off. I went for it despite the size and could not be happier.

As a former HTC HD7 owner for two years, HTC really drops the ball when it comes to supporting their handsets, especially for Windows Phone. When they chose not to update my HD7 to 7.8 and did nothing for me when it had intermittent shut off, I viewed to never use another HTC device again. My opinion, get a Lumia, you'll be happy in the end.

You'll regret switching to AT&T. They're far sleazier than Verizon. Don't be sucked in by the allure of getting a shiny new phone with that 2 year contract. Only go to AT&T if you bring a phone to them and do pre-paid.

if you are willing to pay full price there is no point in looking at carrier's offerings, your options are the 930 1520.3 and one m8, anything else is simply a sidegrade, please do yourself a favor and don't ever buy a carrier locked phone again
