I love the background image/wallpaper feature of WP 8.1, especially with the transparent tiles, but I wish that I could make it one contiguous image.

Right now, the background picture does not appear in the spaces between live tiles on my homescreen, only behind the tiles themselves.

Is there a way to fix this? Basically, I want my background image to be styled like the phone pictured at the top of this article (with a different image, of course):

There isn't a way to do that on WP8.1... However, that is supposedly coming in Windows 10 for phones.
