Why won't my Windows Phone 8.1 (Denim) calendar open?

Windows Phone 8.1 (Denim) Calendar won't open

Hi, I just completed a long overdue upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. The Calendar app - which still shows live events on the lock screen, won't open on the start screen or in the app list. (On the start screen it looks pale and the live tile is not working).

How can I get this to work or uninstall and re-install it again so that the app actually functions?

The Calendar "app" is likely in the process of getting updated still - core apps being separated now, they all need an update initially after the upgrade.
