Updates without service

I have a Lumia 1020 that once was on AT&T but I've had it unlocked and as of yesterday I no longer have service on it.
Going forward, when there are firmware updates, how should I expect to receive them? Will I have to wait until they're published through the recovery tool, should they still be made available when I search for updates over WiFi (where's it checking)?
I've got a couple of T-Mobile branded 520's for the kids that were never activated and didn't get updates until well after T-Mobile released them so I assume they're checking in to a different server.

Re: Updates without service

A phone receives updates from the source designated by the phone's ROM.
In this case, its AT&T.
T-Mobile phones get updates from T-Mobile.
Factory unlocked/unbranded phones get it direct from MS.

It will get updates whenever AT&T releases it and whether it has service or not doesn't make a difference.
