There is a new way to save the new/maps to SD card.....

All credit goes to the "Root Tool" application developer Amol baikar AKA djamol

Here we go...

1, Install "Root Tool" from here... https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/root-tool/f4acc009-ea1e-4063-9bab-fec50195aa1e
2, Move it to SD card.
3, Put the SD card in the memory card reader and go to WPsystem folder
4,Delete the following two files from the installation path.. sdcard\wpsystem\apps\f4acc009-ea1e-4063-9bab-fec50195aa1e> install\ mdilfilelist.xml and wmappmanifest.xml
5, Move all the files under folder HACK to installation path.. sdcard\wpsystem\apps\f4acc009-ea1e-4063-9bab-fec50195aa1e> install
6, Move the app back to phone memory.
7, Run the Root Tool app
8, Open Lumia Registry Editor
9, Selcet HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
10, Select DWORD
9, In the path type System\maps\storage
10, In the Key type UseExtendedStorage
11, Press Read
12, it will show 00000000 in the value field
13, Change the value to 00000001
14, Press Write
15, In the Key field type UseSmallerCache
16, Press Read ensure it reads as 00000000 if not change it to 00000000 and press Write
17, In the Key field type ExternalStorageOverride
18, Press Read. ensure it reads as 00000001 if not change it to 00000001 and press Write
19, Go tot the maps and download a new map.
20, Go to Storage Sense and select SD Card
21, Maps session should show the maps size you have just downloaded.

I have successfully done this in my Lumia 830 running WP8.1 Update 2 (OS version 8.10.15137.148 Firmware Version 02040.00021.15063.02002)

I have mentioned these tips some where else in other forum as well.
Posting it here for the benefit of all who need it.

And I got a doubt. If I download 1 Gb map data to sd card and later reset my phone. Is the map data already stored in my sd card reusable or should I download again ?

The maps that are downloaded to SD card are reusable.
After the hard reset, just follow the process up from #1 to #18 and then go to Storage sense> SD Card>Maps> Manage> check for update.
It will download 1MB of data and you are done.

I have a Lumia 820, OS version 8.10.14234.375, Firmware 3051.50009.1451.1002 and tried the tool. I proceeded according to the tutorial but maps are not save to SD-card, only to phone memory. So the tool doesn't work for me.

Yes, in Useextendedstorage the value is 00000001. I guess the OS version 8.10.15137.148 (GDR2) is necessary for this to work. I'll install GDR2 first to see if it works.

I installed GDR2 and have OS version 8.10.15137.148 and followed the instructions completely with the key values as indicated but no dice. Even after soft resetting it doesn?t download maps to SD card.

sd card does not have a folder MapData. I created the folder on the sd card and downloaded a map but it still goes to phone memory.

Strange - I tried it in my L820 and it ca not even read the value.
OS 8.10.15116.125
FW 3051.50009.1451.1002

But its working flawlessly in L830.

If a simple tool is available, we don't need to spend so much precious time and energy. Hope you are up to date yourself.
