You don't need to. There's nothing indicating you need to. Keep in mind there is always a possibility of something going wrong.

Keep in mind that any apps on your SD card will not work after a reset. You'll need to re-install them.

If you do a hard reset with the SD card in the phone it will ask you if you want to erase the apps and data on the SD card when it does the hard reset. But if you do not tell it to erase the SD card I don't see how it can return the phone to original factory settings.

It's true, there is no official warning.

Stories of SD card interfering with an OTA or reset seem to be getting more rare on the forum as well. Maybe everyone moving to a better card quality?

If it makes you feel better to remove the SD, it certainly won't hurt a thing. I still do it. Better safe than sorry, correct?
