    Icon appears at bottom center of screen when screen is awakened from sleep. Is in area where customarily appear icons showing number of new voice-mails, missed calls, text messages, etc.

    Icon is in three parts (left to right):
    ..1) white square with black circle at center (like old style floppy discs in paper envelope) appears in oblique view;
    ..2) smaller white square with black check mark, seen face on but partially obscured, as if behind the floppy disc;
    ..3) the numeral "1", perhaps the number of un-tended actions of this type since screen was put to sleep - but what is the action in question?

    Aha! Found it under "Lock screen" settings. It's a Hotmail notification. Must have been prompted to start a Hotmail account when I got the phone. I'll check my encrypted password stash for the login information. Thanks

    Huh, can you post a screenshot?

    Also check your lockscreen settings, see what is set for those spots.
