Hello everybody! This is my first forum post, but I've been following Windows Central for all my Microsoft related info for more than two years now!

I've been with Windows Phone since July 2013 now (Nokia Lumia 925 - Love it :) ) and now that I'll be upgrading for my first time later this year, I felt like asking a question I've had since I got my phone: How exactly does the SMS backup functionality work?
I understand that it lets you recover texts linked to a Microsoft Account when you get a new phone, but I'm not totally clear on how/when this happens. My main question is this: Does it only back up texts that come through while it is active (the switch is on for SMS backup)? Or will it back up texts that came through while it was off, after the fact? Say, you turn it off for a year, and get texts in that time it is not active. If you turn it on a year later, will it detect all those texts and back them up, or no?
Answers appreciated, I'm really sorry if it seems long-winded or a silly question, I'm just genuinely curious. Thanks! :)

This happens as SMS is sent and received. It is on by default. If you turn it off it is not started until you turn it on again. It will not return anything from a turned off state. Nothing is done retroactively. Turning it off will not delete what is already backed up.
