Correct me if I'm wrong but, don't all Windows Phones no matter how high the screen resolution is, will always display 3 1/3 row of medium tiles (or 6 1/3 of small tiles)? I just read a review of the Lumia 820 that it has 800x480 and HTC 8x having 720p display will show more tiles than on 820.

"HTC's 8X packs a 1280 x 720 resolution into its 4.3-inch display, allowing you to squeeze more Live Tiles onto the Start screen."

I'm just like "What?". I mean couple of my friends has a 920, and that's like more than 720px. So if that were to fit more tiles then I would've noticed it right away because the tiles would've looked smaller, considering it's 720p+ on a 4.5" display.

720p screen will have extra space vertically. Same horizontal space as other resolutions. So it will display more tile rows.
920 has 768p screen which is the same aspect ratio as 800x480. Windows scale the UI and you get exactly the same UI layout as 480p screen except with more details.
But you can't do so with 720p screen. So, the scaling is done so that the UI has the same width as others but longer.

if you run any WP7 apps or even WP8 apps that do not properly support 720p screen, you will see a wasted block of dead space on top of the screen. You will not see this on Lumia 920.
