Is anyone of you managing your WP from linux? I connect my lumia 620 to Fedora 18 and the phone doesn't appears even as an external drive! Since I have no windows desktop available the option to just booting to windows for phone management is not available.

i don't think you can, i've snooped a bit, but it looks like you dont have much options. perhaps you could take out the SD card from the 620, because since 8 adds card support, it should be easily mountable as a drive

At least files can be transferred via USB, using tools that support libmtp (like Nautilus).
For copying music over you need something that also syncs the music library, I reckon - Amarok (2.6.0) worked for me.

Sorry for the delay. I tried the following options:

- Just send the files to the SD card: This one doesn't works, you end up with the files but the phone doesn't recognizes (at least I tried with Konqueror, not nautilus).

- Connect the phone: Nope, the device isn't detected. This pretty much discards any chance of using an application like rythmbox or amarok-

- Wine? WMP 11 doesn't runs well (or at all in wine).

What a total bummer, Zune worked decently with wine. I eventually just transfered all the files to the micro sd and then in a windows computer I jungled the files (first to the hd, then again to the micro sd). That did the trick but the covers and song info are very poorly handed and I can't edit it. :asleep:

WP8 supports only MTP protocol for multi-media file transfers. If your Linux doesn't do MTP, you are SOL. There is no USB mass storage mode support in WP8. MTP is a standard protocol. I'm sure you will find it somewhere for your OS.

Someone posted recently that Windows OS itself has problem copying large files over 4GB to WP8 and his Linux works just file for the same task.

Could always use a VM if you have to.

VMware has VM software for Linux. I've tried their Windows version and it is absolutely fantastic. If you're unfamiliar with VMs I'd be happy to help you out, they're really easy to set up.

Download whatever version you need here

Install autofs I managed to read JPEG images with photo import tools or just copying but always getting error -6: not supported for other file types - be in NAR or DNG for that matter. Very frustrating. There's not much to do with DNG images on Lumia 1020 but I can't get them out of my phone... ****!!!

no vmware for fedora linux... I can read WP8 on Windows, no need for VM... this isnt that...

I installed ubuntu in order to promote open source, but soon removed it, why:
YOU CANNOT TRANSFER ANY MEDIA FILES THROUGH THE UBUNTU FILE SYSTEM, EVEN THOUGH IT TRANSFERED TEH FILES< YOUR PHONE WONT DETECT EM.

Anyone have anymore luck with this? Microsoft screwed me over on my Windows 8 copy so I had to install Linux Mint. I'm still getting the hang of it but unfortunately right now it means I can't transfer over any ringtones, songs, etc. I've looked through some of the previous ideas but don't really understand them yet. Any help would be great.

Haven't been able to get it running myself. I use Arch Linux on my PC, and a Lumia 822 for my phone. I've just been using dropbox to transfer files from phone to computer, but then again I don't tend to have a huge amount of data to transfer so this works fine for me.
