How do I load older messages in mail?

Is there a way to view older messages in Windows 8 mail (the built-in app)?

I bought my Windows 8 phone three weeks ago, I have Yahoo and Google for mail and both are synced up fine.

The problem is I can only see the 20 most recent e-mails in each account. Anything older gets pushed out and there doesn't seem to be an option to load older messages. This is very annoying, and it's not obvious how to view them.

Please tell me there's an easy and obvious solution

If you go to the settings for the mail account, then select sync settings, you can tell it how far back you want mail to sync. On my 920 it has last 7 days, last two weeks, last month and any time as options for my Verizon mail.

Thank you so much stmav, I have been into the settings a few times but I never saw it because I always have the battery saver switched on. I adjusted the settings as you said and now it is grabbing everything.

Phew! For a moment I thought I'd bought a phone with the stupidest mail app ever! I must say though, they don't make it very obvious!
