schedule airplane mode for night hours

my first phone had this feature (90s) .
it would prolong battery life when you have to leave the phone on as otherwise the alarm wont work (another feature my 90s phone had)

is there an app for this?

I don't believe there is, but just plug your phone in at night.

Because of API limitations and OS lockdown by MS there is no way that an app can have that level of access. Sorry.

why did MS go for this approach vs prompting the phone owner to approve access levels on a application per application basis?

Consumers generally fluff up with permissions and will just allow all permissions this leaving them very open to attack. I think MS were trying to avoid that.
