What really does the Extra+Info besides to display the version info?

When Extras plus Info is updated setting apps are updated. For example once when EPI was updated the touch and glance categories in settings were created. This is how Nokia updates Lumia Black which is Nokia's firmware.

Here is a hint what got updated. When an EPI is updated or when anything in settings is updated it is moved to the bottom of the list in settings. I have noticed this over time. Settings seams to have not rime or reason in how the list is maintained. You will notice that after todays EPI update that Glance is now at the bottom of the list under EPI in settings on your device. With the absence of a change log I would be willing to bet that todays update had something to do with Glance.
