WP8 GDR2 - Samsung ATIV S - GMail via Default Mail - No Server Search?

I swapped to a new ATIV from the HTC 8S for the internal memory upgrade and proceeded to setup my accounts as normal. I have just discovered that I cannot search on the GMail server for my emails, though Email, Calender and Contacts all sync correctly. I was able to do this on my 8S and I suspect this is some Microsoft vs Google bull - is there any way around it?

I googled the problem but got swamped in pre-Nazi-Google threads about setting it up early 2013 or last year.

Downloading all my emails, and swapping to Outlook are not an option - just to head off the lazy solutions

You have to set your google account up as an exchange account. Then you will be able to search on the server

For the domain put in your google email address. For the server address enter m.google.com. Enter your password. Now you have the access you're seeking

Isn't exchange being disabled 31st December though?
