The difference between soft and hard reset

hey friends.
What is the difference between hard and soft reset?
Both of them will erase all my data.
Is there anyway to reset phone and my data won't erase? Like Nokia phones in Symbian operator system?

Soft reset is power and volume down. Its more like doing a restart in a PC. Off and on.

Hard reset takes your device back to factory settings and wipes EVERYTHING off.

The 8.1 update will supposedly restore app data after a hard reset, so maybe wait for that.

No. A soft reset is just like a computer reboot - it just restarts the system leaving all your data intact. Soft reset on most Lumia phones = Volume Down + Power button for 15 sec.

A hard reset wipes all data and resets your phone to its factory default condition.

A soft reset will clear memory, terminate all apps and reload the OS. It won't touch any user data.
