What gives? For example the popular "Gun club 2", which is a 98MB download, turns into 357MB immediately after installation (as reported in the detailed storage check under settings). Anyone knows?

Downloads are typically compressed (XAP app package file is really just a zip file). Once downloaded, it needs to be unpacked and all the game resources (textures, images) will take up more space once uncompressed.

Once you started to play the games, saved game will take up even more space depending on what the game saves.

The bottomline is that the game download size has no direct relationship with what your final storage usage of the game is.

Oh.. so the store shows nominal download size and not the actual space required by the app\game to be installed
    Thanks

And that's why windows phone store needs u to have at least 4x the storage required when downloading apps.
Its the same as in case of PC when compressed files are unpacked.
Helps with data and download times :)

How about a game that is a a 22MB download in store and becomes 233MB right after installation (before even opening it)? Does that make sense? 10 fold compression?

That is the power of the XAP file ;)

If you only have so much data, would you rather download a 22MB file or a 233MB file? I would personally opt for the smaller one.

It is as folks are saying. Think of a game you download, then open up and a status bar pops up, this is the unpacking process, and /or download of additional file. I see this all the time. Some apps like video (not MS, like Justine player), grow...the app itself, and any video you download, creating a fluctuating file size as you add and delete videos.

Well, as long as this is the way it is supposed to be then sure why not

Have you wondered how much a 1GB XAP game, will unleashes itself upon installation? :D

Depends on the developer really. It could really be a 2gb game but they didn't compress it that much.
