whats the main diffrence between .xap and .appx apps?
would .appx apps be faster to to develop for programmers?
would .appx apps mean that there would be more apps in the windows store?
what effect it would have on game developers like gameloft since there are very few good games for windows?

.xap files are made strictly for windows phone
but in windows phone 8.1 update developers can easily make a single app that will run on both windows phone 8.1 and windows 8.1 update 1 PC\laptops\tablets
so , yes it will easier for one to develop applications for both platforms by having the same template , just a lil changing in code for windows 8.1 version , I do hope Facebook take advantage of this code and develop one for windows 8.1 tablets
Microsoft is doing the same what apple did with their iOS on iPhone , iPad and iPod ,
in short Microsoft is trying to merge windows phone store with windows 8.1 store

.appx is the extension for the apps that work on Windows 8 and windows 8RT.windows phone 8 presently runs .xap apps.And also .appx apps are easier to write since they support JavaScript.This can mean more apps in store
