Custom text tones apparently don't work with email addresses

My company's paging system can use text messaging (pagers don't work where I live), so I really need a custom text tone for that one contact. Unfortunately, after a bunch of testing it appears that the contact is not recognized if the text message is coming from an email address. Am I missing something?

I already had a contact set up for this email address and when I tap on the sender in the text message, it goes right to the correct contact. But there's something missing in the linkage between Messaging and Contacts. I should see the sender name in Messaging as "Pager" because that's the name of the contact, but I don't. I see the email address as the sender name, as though it doesn't recognize the contact the email address belongs to. I also have a contact for my home email address, and it exhibits the same behavior if I send a text from email.
