The oleophobic coating is supposedly causing scratches. What good is gorilla glass if the top layer of the display is an order of magnitude easier to scratch and just as permanent?

Do a search for "scratches olephobic coating" and you'll see that the scratches are not unique to the Lumia. The OPs phone looks like there is a lot of grit on the phone. I thought I mistreated mine, but it has never looked that bad (and that's at most after a couple weeks). You at least have to take care of the phone a little bit.

Mrkdilkington.. the coating isn't "causing" the scratches. Grit is causing scratches to the coating. the gorilla glass is there to resist easy breakage and is damn tough.
