screen lock kills email composition

So I'm composing a huge email (under my gmail account), and I get distracted. I come back a while later and find my phone screen dimmed and locked. I wake it up, and the email is not anywhere to be found. Not under my email client, nor in 'drafts' if I log into the full gmail site, nor doing a 'search' on the phone that says 'local'. ugh.
Any hints on where these things go?
Thanks!

I don't see that on WP8 (portico). While editing, if I lock the screen or if it times out, then upon unlock, the editing screen is first thing I see.

But... If I press the home button, and then try and renter mail from the mail app icon, my in process editing session is tougher to find: either I need to get to it from the currently running apps cards (press and hold back button) or it's in my drafts folder on the phone itself (just checked). This is on an account that uses gmail servers but has a custom domain.
