Internet sharing defaults to 2G?

So I have noticed this for a while now but I'll be in an area where my Lumia says its got full 3G reception but as soon as I enable internet sharing if drops to 2G and seems to lock to it. Not only is this slow on the device in tethering to but its also weird. Anyone else notice this? Or have a fix for it? (I'm on Telstra in Australia btw)
