Notification update rate

Is there a way to change facebook/email notification update rate? If someone texts me via facebook, I sometimes only get that message like half an hour later. Even if I'm currently chatting, new messages take a lot time to appear, usualy I get them only after I send a message myself. It makes it kinda awkward when I write "why arent you responding?" and only after that I see that other person has already sent me 3 messages. And there is no refresh button in chat window
Same goes for skype, sometimes I get new messages instantly, sometimes I never get them at all. It's like skype cannot run in the background.
Can this be changed or this is a common issue for all smartphones? This is my first smartphone, so I'm new to all the features

In theory you're suppose to get notifications instantly. These are just poorly written apps that cause this delay.

i get notified instantly. facebook, skype, or msn. however a problem happened to me a few times was some fb messages didn't sent out from my phone. make sure you data plan is on or you have wifi always on.
