I had my friend (has great ties in an AT&T Store) spend the night over my new apartment to get some things straightened and he gladly uses his Lumia 1020 that he's had from 2 days prior. We took alot if test shots, used it openly with apps, basic function etc. and I can honestly say that its a great successor, but only feels like half an upgrade from my unlocked 920.

920 -> 1020
is equal to
iP5 -> iP5S

The camera is the best on a smartphone no doubt, but is still slightly overrated on auto settings. This is a niche device but still for the average consumer should be slightly improved for auto shot. The screen is amazing, and so is the color tuner. He had Glance on and we still got over a 12 hour charge. The OS itself was still silky smooth, but still felt a little smoother (not sure OS or 2GB RAM) pretty impressed but still expected more.

I want one more now then ever, I may buy it when theres a sale or price reductions mainly for the camera something that not too big and can fit in my pocket.

Imo Nokia simply went maxing out what it could do with the current WP8 generation. I have been on a bit of a rollercoaster on do I get the phone or not. I own Lumia 920 and 808PV so I really shouldn't, but then this phone also combines the two.

Thing is I'm quite certain we will see more complete flagship in September on Nokia World and at this point I will wait till that for the very least.

More RAM will not automatically make your smartphone any faster than it was before. However, Microsoft did mention (although they were very unspecific) that they had made quite a few performance improvements. That is what you will have noticed.

Do you think it is possible or logical for Nokia to come out a 'more complete flaship' two months after their announcement of 1020 so they can kill it? If you are thinking about a quad-core, 1080p version of 1020, don't bank on it. It won't happen this year for sure. There is an event scheduled for 9/19. The rumour says that a version of phablet or tablet could be announced.

I'm not sure about Nokia's track record, but in general most companies don't like to release an updated model within a couple months...tends to anger early adopters. Especially for a niche phone like this. I'm actually hoping they stay away from 1080p displays....I swear I don't see anything different, it'll just drain the battery faster.

My personal take is that we'll see two things in October:

(1) A GDR3-based quad-core 1080p version of the Lumia 1020 for Verizon.

(2) A $100 price drop on AT&T's Lumia 1020, bringing the phone to price parity with the iPhone 5S and the GS4.

Depending upon how successful the 1020 is on AT&T, we might also see a T-Mo variant as well but w/o the GDR3 specs.

I hope they'll say that the flexible tablet/phone screen is ready. They teased it on Nokia World 2011 and after that nada. If they'll release one, I'll ditch my acer w510 in a heartbeat

I just want an updated 9XX for ATT this fall. I like the series in general, but my 920(s) have been cursed. Give me AMOLED, without a stupid bezel, and a little thinner device. The 1020 is too expensive.

Am I the only one who just doesn't see how Nokia could announce better yet release a new phone only two months after the release of the 1020? Kind of a momentum killer isn't it. have a special event to announce the 1020 and then come back two months later and say "Hey, look here is an even better device only after 2 months!"

I don't see them releasing an updated 41mp phone any time soon either, maybe 4Q 2014. But it is a lot more likely to see an updated 920 with similar camera specs but updated cpu, screen, design, sometime this fall.
Releasing an updated 1020 this year would bring a lot of hate on Nokia from everyone who went all in and got the 1020 now. I can still remember the backlash from 900 owners when Nokia just couple of months from hyping the 900 went ahead and released the 920. A further blow was addedd by Microsoft there when no WP8 support was announced. This is one of many reasons why I very much doubt that Nokia would do the same to everyone who gets the 1020 at the huge cost now. Also remember that many 900 owners on contract actually got the phone for free with the $100 Nokia refund for the software glitch at release.

Agree which IMO confuses the market. So if they do decide to come out with the upgraded version of the 920, what do you call it?? You can't name it higher than the 1020 because you pretty much are telling people this phone is better than a phone that only got 2 months of shine. However, if you call it the 980 or whatever what would compel someone to get a 980 when the 1020 is clearly the higher numeric model (not my thinking but many will think that "higher number is flagship"). So now your in a pickle.

But not to thread hijack, back to the original thread.

I think people need to get out of the idea of handsets competing each other inside WP. There was a interview were Ahtisaari on some other Nokia exec said 6 months ago that Nokia will bring more specialised devices out with more wide portfolio. Similar to old Symbian days of Nokia having example N82 and N95 out at the same time. WP is selling so little that there isn't any actual competition inside it.

And no,i'm not expecting Lumia 1020 with quad core at all, but a 1080p phablet with a pelican infuenced camera or a more low end PureView camera. This will be the more traditional yearly mass market flagship announced in Nokia World were Nokia has annoumced its flagships for years. Lumia 1020 will be living its own life on side of it.

It seems like Nokia might be going for the double digit incremental naming structure i.e. first gen Lumia phones were in the X00 X10 range (e.g. 800, 710, 900), second gen has the X20 (e.g. 620, 820, 920; carrier variants just have last digit difference with middle digit staying the same i.e 925, 928, 521), logically the third gen will be in the X30 range (e.g. 630, 830, 930, 1030; once again with carrier variants just altering the last digit).

(read about this reasoning somewhere before, so credit goes there)

Either way, Nokia's naming sucks. The people deciding on model names should be fired. It lacks coherency or any real meaning. The Lumia 510, 610 and 710 are based on WP7 hardware, but the 810 is WP8 hardware. 1020 sounds like it should be a next generation device, but the internals are no different from the 920. The 720 sounds like a higher-end device than the 620, but the internals are almost identical and only the later ships with a world wide license for HERE Drive. If they built a 930 using the GDR3 chassis spec (as we both suspect they will), it would be more powerful than the 1020, but that won't be reflected by the model number.

Nokia's naming scheme, which is just arbitrary enough to be useless, is responsible for thousands of posts along the lines of : "this is not a worthy upgrade to the Lumia 920". Even on this forum, where the most informed WP users hang out, such threads were not uncommon. It was so bad that Nokia had to come out with an official response explaining that the 925 is simply a "new expression" of the 920, which would have been completely unnecessary if handled more intelligently:

Instead of
Lumia 925
Lumia 920S
making it instantly clear that this isn't an upgrade, but a variant of the 920 (S=svelt)
Lumia1020
Lumia 920 PureView
or any other suffix emphasizing the camera, but ultimately a variant of the 920
Lumia 928
Lumia 920V
V for Verizon, also a variant
Lumia 521
Lumia 520T
T for T-Mobile, also a variant

IMHO that is still far from adequate, but it's a start.
