I am in the process of buying a case for my 1020, so wanted to create a thread to get feedback from anyone using some of the existing cases and what people think about them and also for any news of new cases comming out.

---------------------------------------------
So far we have:

-----
Rumoured: Nokia Premium Leather Case http://www.windowscentral.com/first-glimpse-nokia-leather-case-lumia-1020

--------------------------------------

I will add to the list if I find any other cases.

So far I am considering getting the AGF case, as its easy to take off and provides basic protection, so that I can take it off when I want to put on the Camera Grip, which I plan on getting as well for my August vacation.

Anyone else want to share their thoughts/experiences?

Thanks for getting this helpful thread started. There was someone this morning looking for a generic side load case for their 1020. Having suggestions, opinions and reviews in one thread is a great idea.

I started a case thread a few days ago asking people about what options I had, so I'm sure others feel the same way. This thread is a great start.

Having gone through some of the cases myself I can at least offer a few opinions on what I have used or seen in person.

I'll omit style because that is completely subjective to the individual.

Nokia Camera Grip $59.99~$79.99

Pros
  • Adds tripod mount functionality
  • Adds 1020mh battery for phone longevity
  • Better grip and added camera functionality with incorporated 2 stage button (light press focuses, second press captures)
  • Allows lanyard to still be attached to the phone
  • High quality construction

Cons:
  • Very limited device protection
  • Adds considerable bulk and weight
  • Makes the phone awkward use/hold in vertical position

Comments: The camera grip is very useful. It adds a lot of functionality to the Lumia 1020 and the only con I have a hard time getting over is the limited protection it provides. There is no shock absorption at all for drops.

AGF Leather Case $35

Pros:
  • Easy to take on and off
  • Very minimalistic, keeps phone shape and not bulky
  • Allows you to use lanyard

Cons:
  • Very limited device protection
  • Very cheap construction/materials for the price point

Comments: I have seen and used this case in person. It is an extremely basic case that feels and looks quite cheap. It provides little to no protection and is really only for aesthetics.

Speck CandyShell Grip $35

Pros:
  • Two color choices
  • Considerable dual material protection (Plastic exterior hard shell with rubber)
  • Design and construction seems to be above average
  • Adds grippy rubber strips to the device

Cons:
  • Durability issues, apparently the rubber strips fall off and tear quite easily
  • Difficult to take on and off with lanyard use.

Comments: I actually bought this one but returned it the same day due to all the negative reviews I read about this particular model. Case felt okay to me and seemed to have above average construction with fair protection. The rubber interior/exterior seems to provide a good amount of shock protection for drops, but apparently it is not very durable and falls apart for people in a week. The rubber strips on the back of the case have been known to tear or rub off very easily.

I can't really judge the other ones yet since I have yet to see them in person. I get my otterbox on Monday and I'll write a review or opinion about it when I get the chance. The Incipio and Otterbox both seem to provide premium protection and construction, much better than the other ones. However, I don't know how much bulk they end up adding.

I've had Incipio and Otterbox cases in the past, and love the protection they provide, except they do add a considerable amount of weight and bulk and can be difficult to get off. These may not, but I wouldn't hold my breath if you want good protection of any kind anyways.

Am hoping the wireless charging case turns out to be a winner. Still not sure why they did not include it. The increase in width could not have been that much of a game changer. I use a protective case on my 920 all the time anyway.

I wanted to get the wireless charging one as well at first, but my issue with it as a case is that it does not provide even a basic protection for the corners, I would love if they combined elements of the Nokia wireless cover with the corner and side protection aspects of the AGF case.

@GloriousGlory
Thanks for the helpful info on the cases, sorry did not find your thread before starting this one.

Edit:
I would really like if someone made a case like this for the Lumia 1020, I have this one for my Focus and its been great.

In my opinion, if you're going to use a case that provides limited protection it's almost a no brainer to use the camera grip. It adds so much functionality.. it really is in a class of its own.

If you're gonna use a case that provides premium protection, both the incipio and otterbox are great choices.

If you don't like bulk then I guess the AGF and Wireless charging case is the way to go, but there's also no protection. Big trade off... The leather case may be good though whenever that's released.

Regarding the Speck case, they do have a reputation of falling apart, but that is if you are constantly taking the phone off the case imo. I have used them too many times to count. The worst experience I had was with the iphone 4 and I kept taking the case off, OCD crap and cleaning it and putting it back on, kept thinking the glass was going to crack ha!. The rubber began to peal and stretch. Now I went back to them when I had the HTC One and loved it! Fit like a glove, dropped the phone once and no marks or scratches, etc. I only took the case off maybe once a week, but that is it.

I have read other reviews on speck cases about them being on too tight and are too hard to get off, this has worked with every speck case for me so far....lay the phone on a flat service, have the back facing up, just slightly push in the middle and crab a corner and it will come off without any issues. If you feel its not working trying prying two corners, and it will come right off!!

I have had the white/black speck case now for exactly a week and love it!! The other cases mentioned felt cheap to me, at least the ones at the att store/website....I really want the camera grip, but it seems people are scratching the corners on their phone. I am truly in love with the leather case, I would pay top dollar for that! My true concern is the camera, thats all, I know its GC3 and all but still makes me paranoid having it in the open! The Speck case creates a space so it can be placed on its back. Overall, you will love or hate the speck case, it does add girth to it, but it also has excellent grip and doesn't slide in khakis or even loose fit jeans! Hope that helps!

I purchased the AGF case yesterday, and its going back today. Very cheap appearance, very minimal protection. I was hoping it would keep the camera hump protected, but no dice. I'm concerned about the small area the hump contacts with a surface. I can see this area getting worn.

What is the hold up on the yellow charging case :-/

Does anyone know which of these cases sticks out just a tad above the screen so it will allow me to lay the device screen side down without having to worry about the screen getting scratched?

EDIT: I'm asking more for the shell style cases. Full body cases obviously would.

My 1020 is arriving today, and I'm very excited! My device-envy for my wife's 920 and my daughter's 521 is about to end!

However, the case issue is a serious consideration. I'm accustomed to the corporate-BlackBerry-on-the-hip thing, but the 1020 might be too large (manpurse?). I *hate* that the wireless charging is separate, making most cases useless. I'll probably get a generic leather/faux belt-clip case, but since the size is approaching phablet, that might be difficult.

IF anyone gets the wireless charger and finds a third-party case that still works--and is easy to remove/install for the camera grip, please let me know. (Why didn't they add wireless charging to the camera grip, so you only need one?).

I have a naked phone, but carry it in a faux-leather holster on my hip. Keeps it clean and clear of scratches. Now I just have to make sure I don't drop it. I completely agree about the wireless charging. It's something I was really loving about my 920, and now I have to find a special cover to use it with my 1020, and then I need to think about if I have it on when looking at actual protection. :( Oh well.

Anyone know if there is a soft case for the 1020 that will fit the phone with the wireless face plate attached? Really want something like that...

I'm going to toss the Poetic Atmosphere out there. I really like the transparent look. Here it is shown with the black Lumia 1020, but I'd imagine it'd look even better on the yellow device.
Atmosphere Case for Nokia Lumia 1020

I especially like how it doesn't add bulk or take away from the profile of the 1020. Plus, branding is keep to a minimum, with a tiny logo on the rubber around the edge. The best thing I find is that it doesn't dramatically alter the look of the 1020, which I find to be beautiful. Really a good no-frills case to show off your Lumia. They also have a matte black case and a flip-cover case.

Whatever happened to the Nokia leather case they previewed? The one that had the little cover for the lens bulge.
