The u means it's using English, and not American English. Can you change the phone language to "English (United States)"? That should give you the US spelling.

I read somewhere that the reason for the additional letters in English (UK) (like favourite and programme) are because typers back then were paid by the line so adding in additional letters to the word (that didn't change its pronunciation) got them more money.

Then, Miriam Webster when making his dictionary sought to remove the added letters that didn't need to be there. Thus the difference between the two 'versions' of English that we have.

Thought, it was a bit of interesting history...

In the end, English as a whole is pretty messed up language and one of (if not the) most difficult languages to learn for spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. We have so many 'rules' that we don't follow its crazy.

Languages evolve in the same way species do. Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese have diverged more noticeably than American English and English have. English happens to be a very unusual language, and none of its dialects use particularly phonetic spelling.

It's also a little misleading to proclaim that British English is any more "correct" than American English at this point. It's pretty unlikely that any dialects of the two resemble the common speech Early Modern English.

always confused by the notion American English is as correct as Enlands English.

there's nothing sensible about some of Englands spelling but ultimitely it is the foundation of Americans English so saying American spell correct English is incorrect. You may spell correct American English but the defacto English will always be Englands.

Come on now -- When are peoples going to learn that BRITISH English is the mother of all versions of English and the ONLY true form.

Sorry to our American cousins who only started with Gods language during the mid 17th century.:winktongue::winktongue::winktongue:

As for that load of convicts down under with their tinnies and dunnies - I say no more :shocked::shocked:

Yup now put on kevlar helmet and ducked below parapet.:evil::evil:
