Last year when Microsoft and Nokia introduced WP8 and Lumia 920, Joe Belfiore said that Microsoft will have control of the updates. The updates will come straight from them.
How things have changed. Or rather have not.
They made an announcement awhile back saying they were throwing update responsibility to the carriers. It was in the same announcement they told everyone WP8 would be supported for 36 months I think.

I'm having a really hard time understanding why Microsoft couldn't work out a similar update arrangement with the carriers. I know everyone believes Apple had more muscle to influence them, but when the iPhone was released, its not like they had a market presence in mobile phones, so how were they able to strong arm Att into submission? Verizon wouldn't have them at first.

I think it all boils down to commitment and resolve. Microsoft can't seem to muster enough or decide to settle in situations like these.

Are they afraid the carriers would dump their phones?

Dunno. Maybe Apples deal put a bad taste in the carriers mouth and they refused to grant Microsoft the same terms. If carriers don't like using resources for testing updates, perhaps Microsoft should offer to test the updates themselves, or something. Hard to speculate when you don't have access to the info behind the scenes.

I agree. 36 months of support doesn't mean squat if the carriers won't roll out updates.

There is not a significant free feature that I know of on Windows Phones that is exclusive to AT&T. They do have the AT&T storage Locker.

Data Sense lets you set a data limit and can restrict background date when it is approached. It can give the cellular and WiFi data usage for the last 30 days and the cellular and Wifi Data usage per app and phone tasks like app downloads, store, people, mail, internet explorer and streming media. You can also map nearby WiFi. It is very useful. AT&T says it takes software infastructure support from the carrier. Are your sure about that? It works on my 521 when I use my AT&T sim.

Sprint has NASCAR Mobile 13 with premium content for race driver radio and Verizon has NFL Mobile with premium content for streaming games. From AT&T ____ ?

Timely updates from AT&T would be nice, along with Data Sense.

Data sense also includes data compression which requires carrier changes

Folks, instead of complaining about AT&T and the update process here, why aren't we posting something over on Windows Phone User's Voice? I did a quick search and the highest-rated post about bypassing carriers for updates has only 22 votes.

Seriously, instead of complaining on a forum, why aren't we putting our feedback somewhere that Microsoft may actually see?

    Own the update process

That one has over 1,170 votes. The problem seems to be that people come up with multiple suggestions for the same thing. This one seems to be the best amongst what I found.

That one didn't show up in my search. Still, that's not a lot of votes, considering the request for custom alert tones was close to 60K last time I checked.

Jump on board people, start voting. It's not a guarantee, but at least we can say we tried instead of just grumbling.

.......and keep flooding AT&t's twitter page. Not effective, but satisfying.

True, but I'd like 2 years. They probably made it 36 months to make it sound better to everyone.

Not everyone buys their phone on day 1 so it shows support for it's most likely life. In other words those looking for a deal may buy a 1 year old phone new and have a 2 year contract making it 3 years from the launch date before they replace it.

If @ATT was telling us the truth:
The Intern is having a harder time stripping Data Sense out of Amber than anticipated. We'd put our good software engineers on it, but they're working on the new iPhone... and it's more important to us.

What about the 1020 and 925 that are being sold now? It works, and both unfortunately without data sense.

They are not telling the truth. They want you to buy a new one. More $$ in it for them.

Wish we could get our hands on the actual update designed for ATT, but untouched by ATT and just flash it. I would rather go that route than have to delete all their bloatware and deal with their stripped down features at this point.

A dude over in the 925 forums was able to get att to give him an early upgrade after he threatened to move to tmobile. He was moving from an iphone 5 to a 925. Maybe they would do that for people here that have not gotten the update?
