Hi guys, I'll be getting a 620 this week.

Is it possible to use NFC while the screen is off??

As far as I know, nope.

I think it depends on what you intend to do. If you want transfer media then the screen has to be on. If you want it to read tags, I think it will work with screen off, though I have never used tags myself.

tried with NFC tags, the screen definitely has to be on, unless GDR2 change that - I'm not using GDR2

nfc tags can't be read without unlocking the screen.
