lumia has a mind of its own

My lumia 820 has "a mind of its own". Sometimes it just opens apps on its own, and changes screens. It usually switches from left to right and back.
When this is happening, I cannot influence it or use my phone. The home button usually works, but sometimes does not. The lock button always works.
This can last a few hours and is happening increasingly. It does not help if I restart my phone, and I have tried to soft reboot it, but that also did not work. It is really annoying and frustrates me.
Do other users have this problem, or do you have a solution?

I'd try a hard reset first but you might end up having to return it if it's a hardware failure

This is a unique issue, do a hard reset, if it doesn't fix it have i replaced. The device seems faulty.
