Nokia Lumia 520 camera

Has anyone noticed something strange with the camera on the Nokia Lumia 520?

I have had this phone for the last two months or so and must say I am fairly pleased with the camera. In good light conditions it is fairly sharp performer and pretty straightforward to operate. There is just one thing bothering me and that is the way that faces are captured. The first full length shot I took of a my wife I noticed that though the shot in general was sharp the face looked soft and blurred. With further experimentation I can see that there is definitely something going on. My guess is, that though the camera software does not claim any face recognition facility the software nonetheless is attempting to do something clever with faces.
Am I going mad - has anyone else noticed something weird in their pictures?

Are you sure you're half pressing the camera button to focus first? I just tried on my 520 and I think it looks fine

No actually I just touch the screen. I find the button awkward and stiff.
