How on earth can a software update solve a hardware limitation?

On the other hand it depends on what kind of limitation is it. Maybe it's just because the screen is large and keeping it on would suck the battery too much.

All the article says is that Nokia has managed a miracle by getting Glance to work on the screen of Lumia 920. Therefore, it works on IPS LCD screens as well. Just not on Lumia 520.

I'm quoting myself here again:
"The most likely reason as I've written before (at least IMO) is that the 520's display/backlight is cheap and likely does not function properly enough with Glance. It likely cannot sustain the uber low power state asked of it by glance without flickering, looking bad, or otherwise using too much power."

The devices not supported also do not have ClearBlack.
