The best advice I ever got and it works every time. First you need to own said device and have an account call in and tell them you are leaving the country and would like an unlock code. Get an unlock code. Unlock your phone by placing a sim from a different carrier into your phone.

Funny though, I've seen people in this forum trying to pay the low contract price then they get irate when ATT or MSoft won't unlock..

Why do you think s/he would work for MSFT? What benefit does MSFT have from keeping the phone locked? They want him/her using it, and s/he can't if it's bad for MSFT. They want someone else walking around with a WP.
