Tried to do a factory reset and am stuck at gears of death - is the data wiped?

I want the answer to be yes because this is a cracked screen device I'm looking to send back to Assurion. I'm happy to send it back with gears of death spinning (batter will clearly die) as long as I know the data is definitively wiped. So, any feedback? Is there any way they could bring it out of the spinning gears and not have the data be wiped already? Thanks.

Thanks for the link, but either way this phone is going back to Assurion because of the cracked screen. I'd prefer not to do anything else to it (or spend any additional time) if I can safely assume the data is wiped, or will necessarily need to get wiped to get away from the spinning cogs.

Yes, you are correct. The data should be wiped. When I had a 920, it would get stuck on the gears until the battery died, then it would eventually work again after a full charge.
