Nokia Lumia 1520 has a camera with 20 MP. When setting the Nokia camera, the selections for the Capture modes are:

JPEG (5 MP)
JPEG (5 MP + 16 MP)
JPEG (5 MP + DNG (16 MP)

Can anyone explain what each one means and purpose ? and which one is best to use ?

Thanks!

If you only take photos for email, mms or social networks, the first option is just fine.

If you intent to re-frame your image to achieve the same effect as zooming OR if you might consider printing some images one day, go with option 2.

If you are a serious photographer that uses Lightroom or Aperture as a digital dark room for post processing images, use option 3.

In short, JPEG shots are already processed inside the camera. But RAW (DNG) files are saved completely untouched, where you can process them yourself, with a software like Adobe Lightroom and such.

You can easily change Exposure, White Balance, Colors, etc, of a RAW file, and can even get very "creative" and change the shot dramatically.

JPEG is a good/fast option, if you want a fast snap to share without further processing/editing.
