If the Icon is anything to go by, the 930 will support 3 columns only, without having the option of 2 columns.
Since I am not a fan of 3 columns, as I feel that it makes the screen look too clattered and busy, as well as making the tiles too small, this is a deal breaker for me. I love my 920, but it is feeling it's age, and was hoping the 930 would be a worthwhile replacement.

You can easily disable that by going into phone settings/start+theme/turn of show more tiles.

1) You are thinking about this based on your experience with a 4.5" device. The LUMIA 930 has a 5" screen, which is a lot bigger and makes a lot of difference when it comes to text being too small or not. Actually, 3 columns were created with 5"+ devices in mind, so they are great on them. It was only after WP8.1 that they were brought to smaller devices, where they are given to the user as an option, precisely because they don't work as great on smaller screen devices.

2) If you still think that they add clutter to your screen, consider using just medium and large tiles. From what I've seen, you can get a really clean start screen that way, specially if you also use a clean wallpaper or even no wallpaper at all.

I personally think 2 columns shouldn't exist! I have a 920 and the 3rd column is great. I do wish there were more tile sizes, like on the PC where you can have a big huge tile.

Appreciate the replies. I don't think that 5 inches is substantially bigger than the 4.5 inches on my 920, but perhaps the higher screen resolution will help achieve greater clarity.
I guess I'll reserve final judgment after seeing the phone in person.

The screen of the 930 is 20% larger than the one on the 920. However, because they are different aspect ratios, the 930 screen is only 1/8" (3.5mm) wider than the 920 screen -- that's just 6%. (Going from the 920 to the 1520 results in a screen that's 27% wider.)
